Some time passed by since the last update. Time in which further elaborated developments occurred. One of the most interesting feature is the preview of the final cut result.
The entire process of cutting an object is simulated based on all previously determined cut paths. The resulting 3D model can then be used to evaluate the quality and to optimize the settings before any real material is cut.

This is the well known Stanford-Bunny which is used as source model for calculating cut paths of.
Based on all 32 cut paths a preview of the expected cut result is calculated which is shown here.
The result of the simulated cut process with 16 cuts is shown here.
A 3D scanned and cleaned up model was used as source for cutting.
The raumschaum set-up at the UDK Berlin was used primarily to cut objects which were digitized by 3D scanning. The images show an example for a detailed object: a mouse made of hard foam. A stuffed mouse served as source object. It was 3D scanned and the digital model was cleaned up prior to cutting.

To cut out most of the details precisely the mouse is positioned with its head to the bottom during the process. Automatically calculated cut paths by the raumschaum software are shown in the image to the right. Each coloured line is a continuous cut path of the computer controlled hot wire.

In December 2013 raumschaum installed its innovative cutting software on an industrial foam cutter for the department of Industrial Design at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. Subsequently, it was used by students in the context of the exercise Design Sprints of the project Styro Street. A short summary how one of the first objects is fabricated can be seen here:
